Columbia State to Host MLK Celebration

(COLUMBIA, Tenn. Jan. 18, 2019) - - - Columbia State Community College’s Office of Access and Diversity will host its annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration program Tuesday, Jan. 22 at 6:30 p.m. in the Cherry Theater. The tribute to King will feature poetry, music, prayer and reflections on the Civil Rights Movement leader.

“Columbia State continues to share programming that includes the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. with students, faculty and staff,” said Dr. Christa Martin, assistant to the president for access and diversity. “His efforts over 50 years ago continue to provide a platform to help build community in our global society.” 

King, a prominent African American leader, was best known for his role in the advancement of civil rights using nonviolent civil disobedience.

The program features keynote speaker Garland Brown, Columbia Central High School instructor of criminal justice.

Jada Harris, a Spring Hill High School senior and Elks Oratorical Scholarship recipient, will deliver reflections on King. The Thompson’s Station Church Worship Team will provide music.

The Cherry Theater is in the Waymon L. Hickman Building on the Columbia Campus, located at 1665 Hampshire Pike. The event is free and open to the public.

In case of inclement weather, the program will be rescheduled for Jan. 29 at 6:30 p.m.
