Christine Whelchel Returns To The Cherry Theater Stage

Performance Free and Open to the Public Tuesday, April 2

(COLUMBIA, Tenn. - March 26, 2013) - - - Christine Whelchel returns to the Columbia State Community College Cherry Theater on Tuesday, April 2 at 3 p.m. The classical piano concert will feature music by Ludwig Van Beethoven, Claude Debussy, J.S. Bach, Bela Bartok, Johannes Brahms and American composer, Amy Beach.

"Ms. Whelchel has performed for us before, and she is very talented and knowledgeable of piano literature," Emily Gaskill, assistant professor of music, said. "This concert covers a wide range of composers and stylistic periods. From Debussy's "Children's Corner Suite" to a Beethoven sonata, the variety of pieces will offer something for all those attending."

Whelchel received her bachelor's and master's degrees from The University of Memphis, where she studied piano with Daniel Fletcher. While in Memphis, she accompanied the Toscanini Chamber Ensemble, served as pianist at First Assembly of God Church, and accompanied many instrumentalists for recitals and competitions.

Whelchel has also taught piano and violin since 1992 and has received Suzuki pedagogy in both instruments. Since 2003, she has held the position of organist and choir director at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Nashville. She is also the ballet class accompanist for the Tennessee Dance Arts Conservatory in Spring Hill.

The concert is free and open to the public and co-sponsored by the Columbia State Lyceum Committee and the music department. The Cherry Theater is in the Waymon L. Hickman building on the Columbia campus.
